Best of: 3 Things You Could Be Doing Better With Your Goals & How To Implement Them

Theresa Forever

Something I constantly ask myself and the team is how can we do this better? Whether it’s simplifying a process, improving our system, or being more careful to pay attention to detail. I am all about producing quality work for our community while creating less stress for myself and the team.

Now a common struggle I see a lot of goal-getters wrestle with is the idea of perfection. Believing that if things aren’t done the way they’ve heard it should be done then they’re doing it wrong or they risk the chance of failure but can I share what I’ve discovered? There really is no one size fits all. There are many routes to one destination. The traction comes when you find the path that works for you, your lifestyle, goals, preferences, personality, and so on.

So in this episode, I’m sharing 3 things you could be doing better with your goals so you can implement them and see bigger results this year than you did last! Hit play to dive in!

Thing 1: Don’t Obsess Over Them

I know, a lot of people you look up to in the self-help space will tell you to focus on your goals until they become your reality and they say things like, “Winners don’t quit” and “never stop dreaming”. It’s this keep your eyes on the prize mentality on steroids and here’s why this doesn’t work.

When you overfocus on your goals and it becomes all you think about day and night you easily become mentally and physically exhausted after not seeing any progress for a while. This is true about any goal whether it’s to lose 10 lbs or to end racism in the world. A lack of small wins opens the door to frustration and causes some to even slip into depression, self-doubt, fear, and overthinking.

If you want to avoid this trap here’s what to do instead:

Be mindful of your goals and keep your eyes on the now! Lol, this means, be present. Do your best at every moment. Show up as your best for every opportunity. Give your best to everyone willing to receive. Make this more than a habit. Turn it into your lifestyle. Embody this so much that it becomes a natural part of who you are. When all you do is add value to others, your goals get accomplished as a by-product of the service you provide to the world. The prize is no longer the goal. It’s you. John Maxell a brilliant leadership author and coach said, “people don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Thing 2: Detach From The Idea of What You Think Your Goals Will Bring/Give You

It’s true, your gifts open doors for you. When you make other people’s lives better your life will get better. You’ll be paid more, your business will grow, you’ll have more opportunities to love on more people, and the cycle goes on and on. However, if you are only after success (whatever that means to you) you could get it but it will be empty and unfulfilling.

The whole point of having goals is making sure they are aligned with your purpose. Who are you and why are you here? If you’re not clear about that then you have some homework tonight! Having certainty and confidence around this makes defining success easy. Outside of this we end up chasing other people’s dreams in the form of set expectations.

If you want to avoid this trap here’s what to do instead:

  1. Get super clear on your purpose: Who are you and why are you here?
  2. Have a healthy definition of success that works for YOU (is aligned with your values, etc)
  3. Take decisive steps towards your goals based on your pure intentions and motives vs trying to attain or achieve something

Thing 3: Take Action

This one is considered the hardest but after working with almost 1,000 goal-getters I’ll tell you it becomes easy when you’re working from a clear intention to serve instead of trying to make a name for yourself. Now, this is coming from someone who has been on both sides of the fence okay.

I know what it’s like to want to make an impact and leave a legacy behind that reminds people you were here like the Beyonce song. I know what it’s like to want so badly for things to pop off and to be successful so you can finally live your dream and bask in what you knew you were capable of doing. And on the flip side, I understand having a genuine desire to make other people’s lives better and doing everything you can to make this accessible to whoever wants it.

I’ve been on both sides. And I’ll tell you from experience that working to leave a mark on the world and to have a bigger impact is okay. And at some level, we all have this thing in us that wants us to be unforgettable or irreplaceable. We want to know that our work matters and people miss us long after we’re gone. That’s human. That’s instinctive. That’s basic. And that’s easy. But for us trailblazers, we don’t settle for easy or instinctive. We aim higher. We go for gold. And I’ve learned that every quality leader on this planet is a servant at heart.

They don’t work to build an empire that outlasts them. They work to inspire people who continue to bring about change long after their gone. They don’t celebrate having their name mounted on a wall or light up in the stars. They celebrate seeing others grow and learn from the impact of their message.

If you want to avoid this trap here’s what to do instead:

If you struggle with taking consistent action remember that this is not about you. It’s not about how successful you can become or the incredible things you’ll get to do once you put in your time and grind your way to the top. It’s actually about how many lives you can inspire to transform into all they were meant to be so they can do the same for someone else who in turn pays it forward and the gift that you shared because of your action becomes the gift that never stops giving.

Here’s The Morale of The Story:

Your time is too valuable to keep doing the same things over and over, getting the same result, and settling for where you are at this point in your life with your goals. If you’re listening to this episode it’s because you probably know there are things you could be doing better and you want to do better. So here’s the deal. Choose one thing you want to implement from the 3 things listed in this episode and put these principles to work!

Do it until it becomes a natural part of who you are then incorporate the next thing. As always trailblazers, this was fun! Thanks for sharing these episodes with people you love and want to see grow. My goal is to inspire one person at a time to go from struggling goal-getter to serious trailblazer. So every time you share this you become a part of my mission and I am deeply grateful for that! Mwah, Love you and until next week, I’ll see you over on the gram!
